scarr leather

Scarr is a handcrafted leather goods collection that aims to inspire a new way of thinking about an old tradition. We combine time-honored methods of leathercrafting with contemporary design to make timeless, functional products for you and your home.

Our designer, Sonia Scarr, grew up surrounded by wildlife and leather saddles on her father's horse racing farm in New Jersey — every summer, she ventured to her mother's metropolitan hometown of Hong Kong. Her roots in these contrasting places are direct inspirations to our aesthetic.

After graduating from Parsons School of Design and working years as a graphic designer, Sonia craved a more visceral, hand-crafted experience. Scarr was launched in 2014 with the belief that hand-crafting creates an intimacy between maker, product, and customer that cannot be found in mass-manufacturing.

Our process

We want to be open with you about our products, their origins, and their cost. At our core, we aim to create long-lasting pieces to reduce consumerism and to preserve the art of traditional leatherworking.

Manufacturing. We design and produce all of our work by hand in Brooklyn — none of our works are outsourced internationally. When a design utilizes materials that we can't produce in-house (i.e., the steel frame of our Magazine and Firewood Rack), we collaborate with NYC's many local talented fabricators. Factored into our prices is a living wage for each hand that helps create your product.

Environment. Scarr limits importing supplies from abroad and uses non-synthetic, biodegradable materials as much as possible, including leather, wool felt, and linen thread. We value product longevity and encourage our customers to reduce consumerism with our durable, multi-purpose products (like our reversible Mousepad and Trivet).

Materials. At Scarr, we want to inspire a new way of looking at an ancient tradition. Leather has been a choice material for thousands of years and is known for its durability and tendency to take on character over time. We source our leather locally in NYC and strive to use leather from American tanneries. Scarr's signature handstitching uses waxed 4-ply Irish linen thread, a natural material woven from the flax plant. Its durability and strength make it the preferred choice for leatherworkers, saddlemakers, and shoemakers.
